Songs You Would Have Skipped
I’m uncovering the latest hidden gems – don’t sleep on these tracks.
“All I Need” - Verzache
Verzache (pronounce like Versace) is an up-and-coming 23-year-old artist from Toronto.
Last week he delivered us a wavey, bedroom pop love song. “All I Need” is the latest single off his major label debut, My Head Is a Moshpit.
He’s racked up some serious streams after he’s 2018 single “Needs” went viral on TikTok, but he’s still largely unknown to the masses. This song is warm and sweet with a nice little edge to it, just what we need in preparation for Valentine’s Day.
P.S. It’s featured on this week’s playlist, so seriously don’t skip it.
“Help herself” bbno$ ft. Diamond Pistols
Vancouver rapper bbno$ (really putting Canada on the map this week) teamed up with rising dance/electronic sensation Diamond Pistols for "help herself," at track about what it means to admit you're a bad lover.
Ironically, this isn't rap or edm at all - it’s an alt rock collab. bbno$ is a true genre-bending artist.
I love that this track takes a brutally honest approach. He opens up about what it's like to be the one doing wrong in the relationship and takes full blame for not being able to give his girl what she deserves. It’s emotional but upbeat and it honestly slaps.
“Canary Islands” - Goth Babe
Ok maybe you wouldn't have skipped this one if you’re a loyal Chopper, because we’ve put Goth Babe on a bunch of our past playlists. But, better safe than sorry.
Goth Babe has returned with a charming indie pop song that genuinely makes me smile. The track follows a wanderlust driven traveler who wants their partner to journey along with them.
“We'll sail the south Canaries
We can go all the way to space
You know that this is the way to my heart”
“Get High” - Chet Faker
Chet Faker used to be one of my favorite artists. I had “No Diggity” and “Drop The Game” with Flume on loop back in the day. But I haven't seen his name in 5 years and nearly forgot about him.
Faker is finally back on the music scene. He dropped “Low” in October, and “Get High” this past week.
The latest single is a bouncy piano-led track about well...getting high. It’s nice to be reminded of his ability to create a truly unique sound. Sit back, roll up a J and turn this baby up.
”FYO” - MICHELLE
MICHELLE is a group of six 21-year-old New Yorkers. They make up an indie collective, creating R&B-infused pop. I first discovered them from a collab with Arlo Parks, when she was featured on their track “Sunrise” last year.
“‘FYO’ is about belonging to different worlds but feeling rejected by both,” explained the band’s Jamee Lockard.
She continued: “Growing up as a mixed-race minority in the US, my self concept was warped by other people telling me what I am and am not, pushing and pulling me between identities. Although my feelings of cultural dissonance still ebb and flow, now I have the vocabulary, support system, and perspective to unpack that inner conflict on my own terms.
We should never give others the authority to define who we are.”
