Surprising Collabs

This past week in music delivered a highly anticipated project between Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, as well as a handful of other pleasantly surprising collabs.

Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak - “Leave The Door Open”

I was extremely hype for this duo who are calling their newly formed band, Silk Sonic.

“Leave the Door Open” is the first single from a forthcoming full-length called An Evening With Silk Sonic. It arrives with a music video and an intro track from the album’s “special guest host” Bootsy Collins.

To absolutely no surprise, this song is hella smooth, romantic, soulful and has a beautiful groove. The ‘70s inspired track showcases some of both Bruno and .Paaks best artistic qualities.

The album release date has yet to be announced, but we can expect the full-length project later this year.

Remi Wolf & Dominic Fike - “Photo ID”

This is an up-and-coming match made in heaven.

I saw Remi Wolf open for Cautious Clay in Philly back in December of 2020. There were maybe 50 people in the audience during her set, and I honestly felt lucky to be one of them. She is so fun and truly talented. Her big curly hair, unique beats and funky personality took control over the crowd.

Wolf has now joined forces with Florida artist Dominic Fike, another recent favorite of mine, on a collaborative revamped version of “Photo ID.” Fike comes with a verse and backing vocals, as well as an appearance in the song’s new visuals.

They are both one-of-a-kind artists and I cannot wait to follow them on their come up.

Juice WRLD ft. Clever & Post Malone - “Life’s A Mess II”

Juice WRLD passed away a bit over a year ago now, but the late rapper has made a number of posthumous appearances since his death; the latest one being “Life’s A Mess II,” a collaboration with Post Malone and Clever.

The track is a follow-up to Juice and Halsey’s collaboration “Life’s A Mess,” featured on his 2020 project Legends Never Die. This version is a bit more acoustic and offers new, dynamic and heartfelt verses.

Alabama artist Clever wrote on Instagram, “This song means so much to me…everything was working against it – the devil tried so hard to keep it from happening – but it’s out. I wish Juice was here to see this –Thank you for everything. I love you. 999 til the world burns.”

Maroon 5 & Meg the Stallion - “Beautiful Mistakes”

Ok if we’re being honest, I’d usually skip right past a new Maroon 5 song. I definitely went through an obsessive phase back in the day but I just think they're passed their prime. Sorry Adam.

Anyway, I saw Megan thee Stallion on this track and I had to give it a listen. “Beautiful Mistakes” is about a relationship gone sour but still feeling stuck longing after the past.

Overall, the pop track is very catchy and repetitive as anticipated, but it’s actually a nice balance of chill rhythms and upbeat energy. Meg hops on with a couple of slick verses, leveling up the track.
