Billie Eilish “Therefore I Am”

It has been way too many days without a Billie drop and my mental health was seriously starting to be affected. Her latest single, “Therefore I Am” is a saving grace.

For some brief history of the 17th century, Descartes once said “Cogito ergo sum,” which means, “I think therefore I am.” This phrase explains that to have doubt and awareness of one’s thoughts, but also to critique and acknowledge them is what it means to exist and think.

Hundreds of years later, Billie translates this philosophy into her music. “Therefore I Am” has the very typical Billie rhythm and glitchy beats, but showcases a more playful spin on her sound. The music video follows Billie as she runs around an abandoned mall, stopping by her favorite stores and grabbing some snacks.

This is not to say the storyline is not intense, though. Billie follows a similar theme from “You Should See Me In A Crown” back in 2018 and finishes the story she set out there.

In 2018, she was confronting the doubters and haters of her style while still trying to solidify her own persona. On this single, Billie is bold. She is above that bullshit and completely removing herself.

The chorus “I’m not your friend or anything, you think that you’re the man, I think therefore I am” is a statement to those people who have knocked her style in the past.

I think this confidence boost in this single will make her future releases a much better representation of the Billie – the Billie that fans expected from the start. I mean, an 18-year-old girl who can wear XXXXXL clothing and still look so good should have this luxury.

“Therefore I Am” is catchy and fearless. Billie’s self-awareness is bringing us a much-needed good vibe as we close out this dangerous year.
