Paul McCartney & Dominic Fike - “The Kiss of Venus”
Nobody could have predicted the power that a 78 year-old ex-Beatles member and a 25 year-old SoundCloud star could hold in one song. Dominic Fike’s rendition of Paul McCartney’s “The Kiss of Venus” is the perfect mix of retro and modern-day.
Paul McCartney’s most recent project, McCartney III Imagined, is an album consisting of collabs with modern artists such as Idris Elba, Phoebe Bridgers, Anderson .Paak, as well as American singer Dominic Fike.
“The Kiss of Venus” features McCartney’s original song that Fike transformed into his own style, turning the acoustic guitar sounds into upbeat, electrifying R&B.
On his Instagram, he wrote “...it was surreal to think that there was no youtube video to teach me how to play it. that I was the first person to get to figure it out…. It quickly morphed into this because there was no world where I was going to try and outdo the original so I made it my own.”
The song itself was inspired by an astrology book “all about the planets and the movements and the fantastic synchronicity of it all” that McCartney received from a friend. He derived the song title from words in the book because he liked how “trippy” it sounded.
The music video features Fike’s melodious vocals, a scene depicting constellations, and Paul McCartney himself. “The Kiss of Venus” discusses astrology and the importance of reflecting on the world around us.
I personally have listened to this song over ten times since I discovered it and have shared it with all my friends. This is a clear illustration that Paul McCartney will never lose his talent, and that Dominic Fike is an artist to continue to watch.
