Songs You Would Have Skipped
New drop, new bops I'm guessing you missed.
In 2016, this San Diego native started making music with YouTube instrumentals, early SoundCloud singles and mumble raps. Now, 21-year-old Jelani Aryeh has honed his dreamy take on alternative rap and indie soul. “Marigold,” is a poetic, experimental bop.
Akeem Douglas Hayes, professionally known as Guapdad 4000, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He is also a member of the hip-hop supergroup Zoink Gang, with JID, Smino and Buddy. You might recognize her name from a fire remix of Thundercat’s “Drangonball Durag” that dropped at the end of the summer.
The Oakland rapper is known for his standout scam records, and this track was a standout and his latest, reflective album 1176 with !IImind.
He sing about how love scares him but ultimately his lover fills him up like "chicken adobo,” a Filipino dish. Much like the flavors of this chicken, this song is savoury and sweet with a hint of tang.
AG Club is arguably one of the best, (relatively) newer groups out of the Bay Area, offering a genre bending approach to singing, rapping and cinematic visuals. This summer they popped off with a remix of their breakout single “Memphis,” tapping NLE Choppa and A$AP Ferg.
Unlike “Memphis” and my other hard-hitting favorite “Colombia,” their latest single brings us into their creative world through some soft, jazzy instrumentals and proceeds to deliver melodic bars. You’ll be ~grooving~ to this one.
This one is an unlikely pick for me – it’s screechy, a bit repetitive and pretty emo, but something about it feels…therapeutic. In this track, 347aidan is extremely anxious, hoping whoever he’s pleading to will let him inside when it gets dark. He also begs the question, if the devil cries will you let him in?
It seems he’s asking if you’ll give in to your demons or give in to the love, and he’s not sure which one is a scarier fate.
I guess screechy and repetitive can still be deep, right? Blast this one and see how you feel.
And now for some positivity! Shoffy is an LA-based pop artist serving major Quinn XCII energy and I’m very here for it. This track is off his fourth full-length project. Major feel good energy for when you need it.
