(re)Mixing things up

These last couple weeks in music offered us a series of new twists on some of our favorite bangers. Whethan and Oliver Tree’s “Freefall,” Ariana Grande’s “34+35,” and most notably Travis Scott’s “Goosebumps” all saw reimagined versions. Here’s what you need to know about them:

Back in October, alternative-dance DJ/producer Whethan released his long awaited project Fantasy, which featured “Freefall” - a cut with long time collaborator Oliver Tree. It’s a super upbeat alternative track that already had great life on its own. Dance music titan Tchami gave us his own take on the track, taking it for a future-house spin that is very reminiscent of the sound on his debut album, Year Zero.

Another October 2020 release was Ariana Grande’s album Positions, which featured the track “34+35.” This is one of Ariana’s more NSFW tracks, featuring tons of sexual references, innuendos, entendres, insinuations, etc. On January 15, she tapped Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion to team up on one of the most star-studded female records of the past few months. Doja Cat and Megan’s verses add more bad bitch energy to a record that was already oozing with it to begin with.

Everybody knows Travis Scott’s “Goosebumps.” It’s one of the most popular songs from one of world’s biggest stars. Well, here we are, five years removed from the album it was featured on, and Spanish DJ/producer HVME (pronounced “hume”) has picked it up and reworked it into a four-on-the-floor dance track.

Featuring the danceability of a thumping slap-bass, and the sing-along-ability of a popular hip hop banger, this one was sure to catch the eye of the public. It is very reminiscent of Imanbek’s “Roses” remix, a track that absolutely swept the nation in 2020. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got more dance remixes of hip hop bangers in the future.
