‘Lyrics to GO, Vol.2’ - Kota the Friend
Kota the Friend has recently made his first splash of 2021. The Brooklyn-raised artist dropped the second edition of his Lyrics to GO album series, a year after the first installment. It’s not a lengthy project; it has ten tracks but a run time of only fifteen minutes.
Although it’s short, the project is complete, cohesive and digestible, making it a truly satisfying listen.
Kota delivers his signature sound of mellow bars over smooth, lo-fi instrumentals. He impresses us with his lyricism and effortless delivery.
Kota touches on his time as an aspiring artist:
“Remember running for the buses in the rain? Remember we was broke and had to hop the train? Remember when she let you get the second base? Smokin' Reggie on the school roof, trust me bro, it's safe. Suppressed most of my teen life. Was hopin' they would go with the rewrite. I always had a dream to be as bright as the streetlights,” he raps.
The album feels like a companion who will chill with you on a lonely Sunday. He truly is a friend.
Kota is relatable. Kota is lowkey. Kota is creative.
The album is a treat for anybody who values bars in their truest form. My personal favorites are “Pomegranate,” “Santa Barbara” and “Luke Cage.”
