28 years of Draft Punk comes to a close
On the morning of February 22, electronic duo Draft Punk announced their split and official retirement in an emotional 8-minute video called “Epilogue.” After 28 incredible years of music, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo are parting ways. The reason for the breakup is not public information yet, and it was a very sad day for EDM fans globally.
Draft Punk formed in Paris in 1993, and their debut album Homework in 1997 set the bar for French house music. On their 2001 album Discovery, we were introduced to the duo’s signature robot appearance, and they have maintained these personas ever since.
Discovery also holds two of their most world-famous songs, “One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.”
In the subsequent years, they were gaining much more fame and dropped a couple of albums, singles, and remixes.
2013 was an amazing year for Draft Punk. They released Random Access Memories, and “Get Lucky” quickly became the song we all had stuck in our heads. Random Access Memories won album of the year and best dance/electronica album. “Get Lucky” won the Record of the year and best pop duo/group performance. These were among the six Grammy’s Draft Punk won over the years.
Later in 2013, the duo co-produced a couple of songs on Kanye’s Yeezus.
In 2016, Draft Punk’s collab with The Weeknd on “Starboy” was a Billboard chart-topper, and they also were on his other hit “I Feel It Coming”
Beyond the music, Draft Punk was an inspiration for electronic artists everywhere. They had such an iconic, futuristic look and style amid the pioneers of house music, in France and globally.
Luckily, the legacy of Draft Punk will be immortal and I have no doubts that artists and fans will continue to praise Draft Punk.
