“Close to You” - Dayglow

Right after the drop of this debut album Fuzzybrain, at just 21, Sloan Struble reached No. 2 on both the Alternative and Triple A charts with “Can I Call You Tonight?”

Two years later, he’s finally back with a new funky single and music video. The release of “Close to You” is a strong indication that we’ll get a hot new alternative album from Dayglow this year.

Although Struble has kept his alternative vibe from Fuzzybrain intact, he plays around with new sounds drawing from influences like Whitney Houston and Patti Labelle. The rhythm is catchy with a plethora of instruments and synth beats; it’s teetering on bedroom pop.

Sloan shared that “There is just a certain danceable yet melancholy feeling about 80’s pop duets that I wanted to channel into. ‘Close to You’ was intended to be performed as a duet, but ended up essentially being a duet with myself which makes sense in the context of the lyrics.”

The lyrics are relatable, and sadly, too true. Struble breaks down the tension between two people at a party that never said hi to each other. Awkward.

We often fantasize about the outcome of situations with the hopes that everything will work out in real life as they did in our minds, like meeting cute girl or boy who we think may be perfect for us.

And when things don’t go as planned, we’re left thinking of what could have been. Struble writes from the perspective of both uncomfortable people in the encounter, but he noted that “in reality, they are actually just singing to and about themselves.”

Fuzzybrain was written and produced to “strengthen hope, promote peace, and foster a powerful sense of community.” I have no doubt that his sophomore album will go way beyond these goals, promoting his amazing growth and talents.

Struble released a spunky, colorful music video alongside the single. His quirky body language and style in the video merge seamlessly with the storyline and overall fun vibe of the song.
