Miley Cyrus “Plastic Hearts”

My favorite and simultaneously least favorite things about Miley Cyrus are her ever changing phases, sounds and looks.

She serves as a reminder that we’re dynamic and growing beings that never need to stay stagnant in our ways. On the other hand, I have respect for an artist that knows who they are and can deliver their authentic soul with every new project.

The only critique to give in this review is that Miley has a hard time coming off as authentic. However, who really cares when she delivers such solid records and performances time and time again?

This weekend, Miley finally released her much anticipated album, Plastic Hearts. Every track is a love child of 80s pop-melodies and punchy rock-n-roll. She features rock legends like Stevie Nicks, Billy Idol and Joan Jett; and covers Blondie’s classic “Heart of Glass,” all serving as some of the best moments of the album.

Miley has finally found a sweet spot that supports her raspy voice and diverse personas. To keep this a quick and positive review, here are my top 5 songs from this project:

”Edge of Midnight”: Serving as the remix to “Midnight Sky,” this song is all I’ve ever wanted. Featuring my lord and savior Stevie Nicks, Miley remixes one of her songs with the classic “Edge of Seventeen”. This track is genius and pays off as my favorite of  this album.

“Angels Like You”: A gorgeous rock ballad with a spot on chorus. This song is gritty and heartfelt, definitely a jam-solo-in-your-car vibe.

“Night Crawling”: Mimicking the style of the featured artist on the track, Billy Idol, this is a well done 80s track, elevated by a disco-style techno beat.

“Bad Karma”: This track features legend Joan Jett and is the rawest performance on the album. I believe Miley is a true rock queen on this one, and these two may make one of the best duos of all time.

“High”: This one may not seem as an obvious choice for a top 5; however, we hear what I would like to think of as “the real Miley.” I mentioned previously how I feel that Miley has struggled with delivering her authentic sound in past projects, but this one feels like the true her. A beautiful break from the punk-rock sound she was going for in this album, she revisits her country roots and delivers us a lovely track.
