‘elated!’ Bea Miller
From a top 10 finalist on the X Factor in 2012 to the voice behind ‘Euphoria’ make-up transformations on TikTok, Bea Miller is killing the game. Her newest project, elated! is a dreamy, techno pop EP featuring her recent single “wisdom teeth” and a spunky spin on her viral banger “feel something” with Aminé.
We didn't know it until now, but we needed this in our lives; Bea Miller is real and bold, and I promise you will be captivated by her blissful serenity on elated!
In an interview with MTV News, Miller brought up how challenging it is to stay positive right now. 2020 is definitely not our year, but thankfully, she has brought some light to the darkness.
“This pandemic is kind of ruining our lives, but at least we can kind of use this as a way to get more creative,” Miller says, and as personal fan - this is much appreciated.
The first track “hallelujah” sets the tone with a testimony for self-care. Miller is part of a recent wave of bluesy, indie pop, and her serene yet hoarse vocals on this song really bring out a dope side of pop soul.
Miller shares personal instances of self-doubt with remarks about our current social and political climates. She says she hopes to share moments of laughter, sadness and every emotion in between.
“FEEL SOMETHING DIFFERENT” featuring Aminé is a fun, funky remix to “feel something,” which has completely blown up my For You Page along with Labrinth’s “Still Don’t Know My Name” from ‘Euphoria.’
Aminé’s verse is a nice edition to add some rap variation, and Miller completely changed the pace and beat from the original song. The techno vibe works really well, and I will not be surprised if it also makes it to the TikTok scene.
Bea wrote “wisdom teeth” two weeks after she got her wisdom teeth removed and released the track earlier this month. While not singing directly about this painful experience, Miller has found “accidental wisdom” and reflects on the simplicity and innocence of childhood.
Miller noted that getting her wisdom teeth pulled “was just one of those small things along the way that made me feel like I was getting older… It made me feel nostalgic towards my childhood.” When we are young and senseless, our perceptions of the world are just as innocent as our lives. We just enjoy life because we can.
Miller slows down with “self crucify” and “making bad decisions” in a very alt-pop manner. “I never want to die” is an alternative rock anthem and it brings some edge and grit to the EP. I get a Billie Eilish vibe, but still, Miller keeps it a little more bright and cheery to fit her girly persona.
This whole EP is much more personal and grunge than her previous work. She is really figuring out her style at just 21, and I think she nailed it on this project. Reflecting on how deeply our experience and observations affect us, Miller is relatable and a true up-and-coming alternative princess.
